**Therapy isn’t about changing you.** However, **Therapy isn’t about changing you.**

However, change can be a byproduct of the work you do in therapy on yourself. 

Experience and our responses to those experiences live on inside of us, like a song stuck on repeat. I like to think about it as the elevator music to our lives. It’s so subtle but sometimes you get quiet enough to notice it in the background. 

The “unconscious” or elevator music, is really the relational work you, we, us, need to do. 

It doesn’t disappear with external change alone. 

The new job, relationship, body, achievement, move, money, or love can help. But if our feelings and minds are left unexplored and unaware, similar experiences from the past tend to show up again and again in yourself and relational experiences, even after all those “changes” you have made. 

Feelings like confusion and ambivalence are great clues that there is something to explore and process.

Sitting in a therapist’s waiting room is a coura Sitting in a therapist’s waiting room is a courageous act.

Imagine the whirling sounds that greet you as you sit in the lobby. The shushing sound machines and fan circulating the air in a small room. 

The soothing aesthetic facing you as you wait for your time to begin.  The experience of not knowing the uncertainty of the next hour. 

You show up with a plan, maybe rehearsed content to explore, overwhelming emotions inside, or the anxiety of “what will I talk about” this week. 

There is a wish for a solution, a hope for another possibility, or a dream that someone will help you make sense of them or yourself.

In the lobby, sometimes you are alone and occasionally someone is passing you by, making a hasty exit. You might give a slight glance up or you might feel the urge to avoid eye contact as they pass, feeling your “feels” about being in a therapist’s lobby. 

Regardless, it is an in-between space filled with tender possibilities and fragile unknowns. 

The difficult part to start any process is “showing up”, which is the hardest part of self-work that many in helping fields hint at. However true the cliché it doesn’t quite scratch the surface in the experience. 

It is vulnerable, like the first day of a new school or first date. The past experiences with other therapist’s playing in your mind or as a newcomer to therapy, a complicated unknown. 

It is working up the courage to be within yourself in front unknown other for almost an hour. 

To slow down enough to hear the sycophancy of sounds in your mind. The background elevator music that has been playing in your head. 

Whatever the background music is, you won’t know it until you decide to sit in a lobby, be it in-person or virtually. 

It is tolerating the waiting to begin, that is not for the faint of heart. Whatever the experience in the lobby, or on the phone booking the appointment like all change getting to that point means you already began changing. 

Hold that with you, as you sit and wait, ready to begin because change begins with turning toward and facing the unknown.

Therapy does not promise to “feel good”, but i Therapy does not promise to “feel good”, but it’s the road to feeling “good”. 

To be with yourself in front of another, the courage and vulnerability to name what is happening inside, to feel, and make meaning is a way to understand yourself in relationship.

To build the home you always wanted to have, inside of yourself, then creating that home outside of yourself. 

“Where should we begin?” 

Wherever you choose, together we will wind our way there, the scenic route, because the short cuts haven’t worked yet. 

“Good” therapy is a life changing conversation, but it starts out simple, as a conversation.
